The case involves the abuse of generative artificial intelligence, prompting lawmakers at various levels to push for legislation to ban the distribution of inappropriate content. Last year, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received 4,700 related reports, including extortion cases involving deepfake images of real children created using generative AI.

A pediatric psychiatrist in North Carolina has been sentenced to prison for producing, possessing, and distributing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Psychiatrist David Tatum was charged for secretly recording patients using artificial intelligence software to create illegal images and videos. Prosecutors stated that the psychiatrist's actions harmed children, resulting in a 40-year prison sentence and 30 years of supervised release.
